WASHINGTON, D.C. March 2, 2017– The following statement was issued by Janis Searles Jones, President of Ocean Conservancy, in reaction to leaked budget cuts for the Environmental Protection Agency by the Trump administration:
“If the scale of the budget cuts proposed by President Trump for the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) hold true then it signals a clear abandonment of America’s coastal communities and the health of millions of Americans by this administration.
“Important programs like beach water quality testing and restoration of the Puget Sound, Chesapeake Bay, San Francisco Bay and the Great Lakes are on the chopping block. Funding for environmental education and environmental justice could be gutted.
“The EPA is being systematically stripped of its ability to function as a trusted and valued partner to the American people. This evisceration will not only set America back by decades, it recklessly gambles with the future health and prosperity of our nation.
“Ocean Conservancy calls on Congress to reject this proposed budget, and to prioritize the needs of American coastal communities. This leaked budget is unacceptable, shortsighted and dangerous.”
