President-elect Trump has announced his pick for the Administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency, Oklahoma Attorney General Scott Pruitt. Below is a statement from Andreas Merkl, CEO of Ocean Conservancy:
“The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is one of the country’s most important institutions and it should be led by someone who values the tremendous benefits and safeguards it provides all Americans. The EPA’s guidance on clean air and clean water is backed by decades of science, which has benefited not just the health of all Americans but our lands, coasts, rivers and ocean. Our ocean and coasts would be far less healthy and productive without the steady efforts of the EPA to restrict harmful pollution.
“Reducing carbon pollution in the atmosphere is critical to address ocean acidification, which is impacting shellfish growers and fishermen across this country. Carbon emissions are causing the Arctic to warm faster than anywhere else on the planet. Fish populations are shifting because of warming ocean temperatures. And scientists grow increasingly concerned about the volatility of the entire ocean ecosystem.
“President-elect Trump’s choice to lead the EPA, Scott Pruitt, has a record of anti-environmental action. This nomination raises serious questions on how the Trump Administration’s environmental policies will impact the ocean. As the confirmation process moves forward, the American people deserve close scrutiny of all nominees. The U.S. Senate will need to ask tough questions in its vetting process – questions about whether the EPA will roll back the significant progress made in reducing carbon emissions and improving water quality.
“The future of American livelihoods, coastal economies and a healthy ocean for future generations is at stake.
