Ocean Conservancy is setting the agenda in the halls of power. We continue our legacy of nearly 40 years today as we translate threats into sound, practical policies that protect our ocean and improve our lives. We recognize that real leadership means real cooperation — between governments, businesses, scientists, policymakers, conservation organizations, and citizen advocates. With your help, we'll continue to create concrete solutions that lead to lasting change — so we can all experience the ocean for generations to come. Learn more about Who We Are »
Trash Free SeasMarine debris is one of the most pervasive pollution problems of our time, and Ocean Conservancy is at the forefront of a growing movement to combat the mounting threat. For 25 years we've led the world's largest cleanup effort of our ocean and waterways, removing millions of pounds of trash in over 100 countries. But cleanups alone can't solve the problem; we need to stop marine debris at the source.
AquacultureFish farming is one of the fastest-growing responses to our declining wild fish supply and now accounts for more than 50 percent of the world's seafood consumption. Without thoughtful planning and regulation, fish farming can severely harm ocean ecosystems. Ocean Conservancy advocates for a thoughtful approach that would protect our fisheries and ocean from unacceptable risks.
Gulf of Mexico RestorationThe Gulf of Mexico is a national treasure and an economic driver but it is suffering from decades of neglect and degradation. The Gulf and its residents need relief, restoration and reform now, and we are committed to doing everything we can to advocate for science-based restoration plans that go beyond the BP oil disaster. Our ongoing efforts to end overfishing and create healthy, sustainable and productive fisheries will help restore the region’s environmental and economic health.
ArcticThe warming of the Arctic — the earth's air conditioner — is the greatest conservation challenge we face. Home to whales, seals, polar bears, and more than four million people, the Arctic is warming at twice the rate of the rest of the planet. But it's not too late. With nationally renowned policy and science experts, we are uniquely positioned to collaborate with government, business, conservationists, and Alaskan Natives to confront these threats.
Marine Protected AreasOur underwater treasures deserve permanent protection, just like Yosemite or Yellowstone on land — yet the underwater world is largely overfished, overpolluted, and underprotected. Scientific studies show that marine protected areas boost fish size and numbers while helping to protect and replenish the ocean habitat. We are working hard to see that the ocean’s most extraordinary places are preserved for future generations to use and enjoy.
Marine Spatial PlanningLike urban sprawl, today we have marine and coastal sprawl, as the ocean faces an era of unprecedented activity. Recreation, shipping, and offshore wind energy development are a few of the growing demands. We need law and order to balance and coordinate commercial and recreational activity while protecting our ocean ecosystems.
